Dr John Holmes is Director, JDH Consulting. He was previously at James Cook University, Townsville for seven years, and CSIRO, Divisions of Building Research, and Building, Construction and Engineering for fourteen years, reaching the level of Chief Research Scientist. He was also a Principal Research Fellow at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia and a Visiting Professor at several North American universities.

He has been engaged in research, testing and consulting in wind loads and wind effects since 1969. He was actively involved in the writing of Australian Standards AS1170.2 and AS/NZS1170.2 (Wind loads) and AS3995 (Design of steel lattice towers and masts) and is the author of a book on wind loading of structures. He is an adviser to ESDU International PLC of London, publishers of comprehensive engineering design guides, and was an advisor to the Technical Committee on Wind Loading of Malaysia. He was the Regional Coordinator Asia-Australasia, International Association of Wind Engineering (IAWE) and has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal 'Wind and Structures'.

Dr Holmes was awarded a Fulbright Senior Fellowship, for research at Texas Tech University in 1989, the Warren Medal by the Institution of Engineers in 1990, a Research Fellowship by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, for research at Kyoto University in 1996, and the John P. Laborde Visiting Chair at Louisiana State University in 2003. In 2011 he was awarded an IAWE Senior Award (Davenport Medal) by the International Association for Wind Engineering
