Lessons from the October 2013 NSW fires

Community research is underway in NSW following the October 2013 bushfires

The Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre and the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre have been engaged by the New South Wales Rural Fire Service to conduct independent community research into the October 2013 bushfires.

Research has now commenced at three locations affected by the recent bushfires:

  • Port Stephens
  • Blue Mountains (including Springwood/Winmalee, Mount Victoria and along the Bells Line of Road)
  • Southern Highlands (Balmoral Area)

Researchers are conducting face-to-face interviews with people in these communities, to assist with compiling a report for the NSW RFS into community preparedness and response, and to assist with improvements to bushfire safety initiatives.

Affected residents can register their interest in taking part in the research by emailing info@bushfirecrc.com or calling 0419 550 409.

An online survey will also be available shortly. Check the Bushfire CRC, Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC or the NSW RFS websites for updates.
