Bushfire CRC and AFAC 2006 Conference draws a large crowd

With 1325 delegates from 26 countries, and a trade exhibition of 110 stands, the joint Bushfire CRC and AFAC/International Fire Chiefs’ Association of Asia (IFCAA) Conference 2006 in Melbourne in August has been hailed as an event which exceeded all expectations.

With the conference being broken up into two streams – AFAC/IFCAA and Bushfire CRC – delegates were spoilt for choice over the course of the event.

The Bushfire CRC stream commenced with a full day of workshops prior to the main conference. The workshops featured in-depth discussion of issues involved in community education, planning and economics.

The research presentations packed out the conference roomsThe popularity of the Bushfire CRC research presentations in the main conference saw the need for the room to be extended to cope with the demand. Topics covered included bushfire risk modelling, simulation modelling, fire weather, aerial suppression, volunteerism, prescribed burning and fire and biodiversity in northern Australia. More than 70 research posters were on display.

The Joint AFAC/Bushfire CRC Conference 2007 will be held from September 19 – 21 in Hobart.

The 2008 event will have a broader international focus and will be held in Adelaide in October.
